Growing up in our culture, many of us know the power of njangi. We know what it means when family, friends, and community members come together to support one another. It is more than saving. It is trust. It is discipline. It is love.
But I have seen the darker side of traditional finance too — and it haunts me. A close family member worked as a daily AKAO collector at a microfinance institution. She was dedicated, honest, and hardworking. Then one day, fraudsters targeted her. They lured her with false promises, took her to a native doctor, threatened her with death, and manipulated her into handing over the money she had collected from her clients. She was hypnotized — terrified and confused. Before she realized what had happened, she had given them everything.
What followed was over a year of suffering. She borrowed from here and there — from family, from friends, from anyone who would listen — just to repay her clients. The shame, the debt, the trauma. She carried it all alone. And she is not the only one. Across Cameroon, collectors are robbed on the road, clients lose money with no trace, and passbooks get falsified. The system is broken.
That experience never left me. It is one of the reasons I built Ekié.
